Bathroom Remodeling questions, answered
How long does a bathroom remodel take?
A vanity replacement can take a day or two. A tub-to-shower conversion often takes one to two weeks. A full remodel commonly takes several weeks, depending on layout changes, permits, inspections and material lead times. Ask your contractor for a written schedule.
Is a tub-to-shower conversion bad for resale?
It depends on the house. Many buyers like a walk-in shower, but some, especially families with young children, want at least one tub in the home. Converting a tub in one bathroom while keeping a tub elsewhere is a common approach.
What's the most important part of a shower remodel?
Waterproofing. Tile and grout aren't waterproof on their own. A proper waterproofing membrane or system behind and beneath the tile, carefully detailed at seams, niches and the drain, is what protects the framing.
Do I need a permit to remodel my bathroom?
Usually, if the work involves moving or adding plumbing, changing electrical circuits, or structural changes. Cosmetic updates may not. Requirements vary by jurisdiction, so ask your contractor or local building department.
What size exhaust fan does my bathroom need?
The fan should be sized for the room's volume, and it must vent to the outdoors, not into the attic. Your contractor can size it. Run it during showers and for a while afterward.
Can I make my bathroom more accessible without a full remodel?
Often, yes. Grab bars anchored into framing or blocking, a handheld shower, a shower seat, better lighting, a comfort-height toilet and slip-resistant flooring are common upgrades.
What countertop is best for a bathroom vanity?
Quartz is popular for durability and low maintenance. Natural stone looks great but needs sealing. Solid surface and cultured marble can include integrated sinks. The right choice depends on budget, style and how much maintenance you want.
Why does my bathroom have mold on the ceiling?
Usually from moisture that isn't removed: a fan that's too small, isn't used long enough, or vents into the attic instead of outside. Cold exterior walls without insulation can also cause condensation. Fixing ventilation is the long-term solution.
Should I replace plumbing during a remodel?
If the plumbing is old, corroded or a mix of materials, replacing it while the walls are open costs much less than doing it later. At minimum, replace shutoff valves and supply lines.
How do I compare bathroom remodeling quotes?
Compare scope, not just price: demolition, plumbing and electrical work, waterproofing system, tile and fixture allowances, permits, cleanup, schedule and warranty. Ask each contractor to explain anything that differs.
